Cookie Clicker Beginner's Guide and Strategy
Cookie Clicker looks simple: click a cookie, buy a grandma, repeat. A few smart habits, though, can make your bakery grow many times faster. This guide walks you through the first minutes, the mid game and the big decisions that come later.
Your first few minutes
At the very start, clicking the big cookie is your only income, so click away until you have 15 cookies and buy your first Cursor. A Cursor clicks the cookie for you once every ten seconds. Buy a handful of them, then save up 100 cookies for a Grandma, who bakes one cookie per second on her own.
The first upgrades in the store double the power of your cursors and of your own clicks. They are extremely cheap for what they give, so buy every upgrade as soon as you can afford it during the first stretch of the game.
- Click actively for the first 10–15 minutes: early on, your clicks are worth more than all your buildings combined.
- Buy upgrades before buildings whenever both are affordable.
- Your first goal is a Farm (1,100 cookies), then a Mine (12,000) and a Factory (130,000).
What to buy: buildings or upgrades?
Every building gets more expensive the more of it you own: each purchase raises its price by 15%. That is why a new type of building is often a better deal than your fiftieth grandma, even if it looks expensive.
A simple way to compare purchases is payback time: divide the price by the extra cookies per second it gives you. The lower the number, the better the buy. Hover over anything in the store to see how much it adds.
Keep an eye on building milestones. Owning 1, 5, 25, 50, 100, 150 and then every 50 more of a building unlocks a new upgrade that doubles that building's output. Reaching the next milestone is often worth more than spreading your cookies around.
Later in the game, use the ×10 and ×100 buttons at the top of the store to buy in bulk and save time.
Achievements, milk and kittens
Achievements are not just trophies. Every achievement adds 4% milk, the liquid you see rising at the bottom of the cookie panel. Milk powers the kitten upgrades, which multiply your whole production based on how much milk you have.
That makes easy achievements worth chasing: owning a certain number of each building, baking a set amount of cookies, clicking golden cookies, or even renaming your bakery. Once you start buying kitten upgrades, every new achievement directly speeds up your bakery.
Clicking or idling?
Both styles work, and the game rewards each in its own way.
- Active play. Mouse upgrades make each click worth a percentage of your cookies per second. Combined with golden cookie effects such as Click Frenzy, a few seconds of fast clicking can earn hours of production.
- Idle play. If you check in only now and then, focus on buildings, kitten upgrades and anything that boosts production while you are away.
Most players mix the two: idle most of the time and click hard when a golden cookie buff appears.
Golden cookies
Every 5 to 15 minutes a golden cookie appears somewhere on the screen for a few seconds. Clicking it gives a random bonus: an instant pile of cookies (Lucky), seven times your production for over a minute (Frenzy), a huge boost to clicking (Click Frenzy) and more.
A useful habit is to keep a cookie bank: Lucky pays 15% of your cookies in the bank, capped at 15 minutes of production, so holding about 6,000 times your cookies per second lets it pay out the maximum. All the effects and combos are explained in our golden cookie guide.
The Grandmapocalypse and wrinklers
Some grandma research upgrades eventually start the Grandmapocalypse. The background turns red, wrath cookies begin to replace some golden cookies, and wrinklers crawl toward your big cookie.
Wrinklers look scary but are usually your friends. Each one eats 5% of your cookies per second, yet when you pop it, it returns 110% of everything it ate. Because every wrinkler eats more when more of them are attached, ten wrinklers left alone for a while turn into roughly six times your normal production once popped.
If you prefer calm, golden-only cookies, the Elder Pledge and Elder Covenant upgrades pause or stop the Grandmapocalypse.
Saving and playing offline
The game saves your bakery in your browser automatically every 60 seconds, and you can press Ctrl+S to save at any time. Clearing your browser data deletes the save, so open Options now and then and use Export save to keep a copy of your progress code somewhere safe. Import save brings it back on any device.
By default, nothing is baked while the game is closed. After your first ascension, the heavenly upgrade Twin Gates of Transcendence lets your bakery keep working at 5% speed for up to an hour while you are away, and further upgrades raise both the speed and the time limit.
Quick strategy checklist
- Buy every cheap upgrade first, especially the ones that double a building.
- Compare buildings by payback time, not by price.
- Push buildings to the next milestone (25, 50, 100…).
- Click every golden cookie, and click fast during Click Frenzy.
- Keep a bank of about 6,000× your cookies per second for Lucky.
- Collect easy achievements for milk, then buy kitten upgrades.
- Let wrinklers feed for a while before popping them.
- Export your save from time to time.
- Ascend once a reset gives you a solid prestige boost (see the ascension guide).
