Ascension, Prestige and Heavenly Chips
Sooner or later every baker faces the big question: should I give up my bakery and start over? Ascension resets your progress in exchange for permanent bonuses, and used well it makes every new run much faster than the last.
What ascension does
When you ascend (the Legacy button at the top of the screen), your current run ends. Your cookies, buildings and most upgrades are reset, and you travel to the heavenly screen where you can spend heavenly chips on permanent upgrades. Then you reincarnate and start baking again.
In return, you gain prestige levels. Each prestige level can add +1% cookies per second permanently, so a run with a few hundred prestige levels is dramatically faster than your first one.
How prestige is calculated
Your prestige level depends on all the cookies you have ever baked, across all runs. It equals the cube root of your all-time cookies divided by one trillion.
| All-time cookies baked | Prestige level |
|---|---|
| 1 trillion | 1 |
| 1 quadrillion | 10 |
| 1 quintillion | 100 |
| 1 sextillion | 1,000 |
| 1 septillion | 10,000 |
Every new prestige level you gain also gives you one heavenly chip to spend. Because of the cube root, each extra level needs more cookies than the last, which is why later ascensions take longer to pay off.
Unlocking the full prestige bonus
Right after your first ascension, your prestige levels are not yet working at full strength. Five cheap upgrades in the regular store unlock their potential step by step:
- Heavenly chip secret: 5% of the bonus.
- Heavenly cookie stand: another 20%.
- Heavenly bakery: another 25%.
- Heavenly confectionery: another 25%.
- Heavenly key: the last 25%, for the full +1% per level.
They cost cookies, not chips, and they are very cheap compared to what they give, so buy them first in every new run.
When should I ascend?
There is no single right moment, but these rules of thumb work well:
- First ascension: wait until a reset would give you at least a few hundred prestige levels. Many players aim for around 365–440, which is enough to buy the most important early heavenly upgrades.
- Later ascensions: ascend when your production has slowed down and a reset would add a big share to your current prestige, for example 50–100% more.
- Watch the meter: the Legacy button shows how many levels you would gain. If that number is growing slowly, it is probably time.
Short, frequent ascensions are also fine early on: they unlock heavenly upgrades sooner, and each new run gets through the early game in minutes.
What you keep and what you lose
| Kept after ascending | Reset |
|---|---|
| Prestige levels and heavenly upgrades | Cookies in the bank |
| Achievements (and the milk they give) | All buildings |
| Sugar lumps and building levels | Regular upgrades |
| All-time cookies baked | Current run statistics |
Permanent upgrade slots let you carry chosen regular upgrades into the next run, which helps a lot in the early minutes.
Best heavenly upgrades to buy first
The heavenly upgrades form a tree: you need the ones above before you can buy the next. Good first picks are:
- Legacy and Heavenly cookies: the root of the tree and a permanent +10% production.
- How to bake your dragon: lets you raise a dragon whose auras give powerful bonuses.
- Twin Gates of Transcendence: your bakery keeps working while the game is closed. Its follow-ups make offline production faster and last longer.
- Starter kit and Starter kitchen: start each run with free cursors and grandmas.
- Permanent upgrade slot I: keep one regular upgrade of your choice between runs.
- Heavenly luck: golden cookies appear a little more often.
- Persistent memory: research upgrades finish much faster.
- Kitten angels and the Season switcher: more milk power and access to seasonal events whenever you like.
